Search Westmoreland County Inmates

The Westmoreland County Prison keeps a public inmate roster that lists people held in county custody right now. Most people who want to search for Westmoreland County inmates are checking on a relative, a friend, or a case. A Westmoreland County jail roster search starts with a last name, a booking number, a commitment date, or a housing unit. The roster is a custody list, not a court file. It does not carry charges or bond. Those facts live in the state court docket system instead. Knowing what the roster shows, and what it leaves out, saves time and stops a wrong guess about someone's case.

Westmoreland County Inmate Roster Overview

The county prison runs its own active inmate list online. It is hosted by Westmoreland County, not by a third-party vendor. The list shows people currently held at the Westmoreland County Prison. It does not cover everyone tied to the county. People in state custody, federal custody, or another county jail will not show up here. The roster is built around current custody, so a name drops off once a person leaves the prison.

The prison is a separate operation from the Sheriff's Office. Sheriff James Albert leads the Westmoreland County Sheriff's Office, which handles civil process, real estate sales, prisoner transport, gun permits, and a warrant division. The prison holds people in custody and keeps the inmate roster. The Westmoreland County Prison page links to the search tools, visitation rules, mail rules, commissary, and phone service.

The roster works as a snapshot. It is current for who is in the building, but it is not a charge sheet. For charges and bond, the county itself sends you to the state court docket system, which is covered further down.

Westmoreland County Prison Inmate Search

The prison gives the public two ways in. One is an alphabetic listing by last-name initial. The other is a search form with a category dropdown. Both open through the official county prison pages. You can reach the live tool from the Search Current Inmates page or go straight to the prison inmate search form.

The Search Current Inmates page is the cleanest place to begin. It explains the choices and links to both display options in one spot.

Here is the official county page that holds the inmate search links.

From that page you pick either the alphabetic roster or the search form. The search form is faster when you know the person's last name or booking number.

The search form uses a single category dropdown that changes what you type next. Pick the category first, then enter the matching value. These are the fields the public search form accepts.

Field LabelTypeRequiredNotes / Format
CategoryDropdownYesLast Name; Commit Date (m/d/yyyy); Booking Number; Unit; All Inmates.
CriteriaTextConditionalEnter the last name, commit date, booking number, or unit that matches the chosen category.
CalendarDate pickerOptionalFills the Criteria box with a date; accepts mm/dd/yyyy or mm-dd-yyyy.
Submit RequestButtonn/aRuns the search in a new window.
Clear CriteriaButtonn/aClears the entered criteria.

The date fields are picky. The tool checks that the month is 1 to 12 and the day is 1 to 31, and it handles leap years and short months. If a date is rejected, retype it as mm/dd/yyyy. The "All Inmates" choice pulls the full current list when you do not have a name yet.

How to Use the Roster

The search runs best on a desktop browser. The county tool is a legacy interface, and a note on the page says it works best in Internet Explorer. On a phone or a modern browser the page still loads, but the layout can look dated and a date field may behave oddly. If a search will not run, try a desktop browser before you give up.

  1. Open the prison inmate search form or the Search Current Inmates page.
  2. Pick a Category: Last Name, Commit Date, Booking Number, Unit, or All Inmates.
  3. Type the matching value in the Criteria box, or use the calendar for a date.
  4. Click Submit Request to run the search; results open in a new window.
  5. Read the roster row for name, DOB, booking number, commitment date, and unit.
  6. For charges and bond, copy the name and booking number, then move to a UJS docket sheet.

When a common last name pulls back many rows, add the booking number once you have it. Booking number is unique to one custody event, so it lands you on a single person fast.

What the Westmoreland County Roster Shows

The roster result is short by design. It confirms custody and basic identity. It does not try to be a full criminal file. Each row carries a few plain fields plus a notification link. Here is the field set seen on a current roster result.

FieldWhat It Shows
NameLast name, first name, and a middle or suffix where entered.
DOBDate of birth in M/D/YYYY, used to tell apart people with the same name.
Booking#A sequence-year code such as 176-2026 or 1571-2025; unique to one custody event.
Commitment DateThe date the person was committed to the prison, in M/D/YYYY.
UnitA single housing-unit letter such as A, B, C, D, F, H, J, K, or L.
Notification LinkA PASAVIN/VINELink button to register for custody-change alerts.

Column headers act as sort controls. You can sort by name, DOB, booking number, commitment date, or unit. The alphabetic view adds A-to-Z navigation plus an "All" option. The booking number format is worth a second look. The part before the dash is a sequence count for the year, and the part after the dash is the year itself. So 176-2026 reads as the 176th booking logged in 2026.

What the Roster Does Not Show

The county roster leaves out most of what people expect from a jail page. There is no mugshot. There is no physical description. There are no charges. There is no bond amount, no arresting agency, no court date, and no warrant number on the list. The active roster also does not post a release date. This is on purpose. The county treats the list as a custody record and points elsewhere for the legal detail.

That is why the same row that confirms custody cannot tell you why someone is held. To find charges and bond, the county directs searchers to the state court docket system. The roster confirms the person is in the building. The docket sheet explains the case.

Important: The county roster has no mugshots, charges, or bond; for those details the county sends you to the Pennsylvania Unified Judicial System docket sheets covered in the next section.

Here is the live prison inmate search form, where the category dropdown and Criteria box appear.

The form's plain look matches its legacy build, which is also why the page favors a desktop browser. Run the category dropdown, enter your value, and submit.

Finding Charges and Bond on UJS

The roster gives you the name and booking number. The Pennsylvania Unified Judicial System, called UJS, gives you the case. UJS is the free statewide court portal. Its docket sheets hold charges, statute, grade, bail type and amount, hearing dates, and disposition where public. The county says plainly that inmate charges and bond are found on UJS docket sheets, not on the prison roster.

Start at the UJS Case Search or open the UJS Docket Sheets tool. Search by participant name and set the county to Westmoreland to cut down on statewide matches. If you already have a docket number, use it, because a docket number lands on one case. A Common Pleas criminal docket reads like CP-25-CR-0009999-2017. A magisterial docket begins with MJ.

  1. Confirm the person's name and booking number on the prison roster.
  2. Open UJS Case Search and pick Participant Name, then set County to Westmoreland.
  3. Match the right person by name and date of birth.
  4. Open the docket sheet to read charges, grade, bail, hearings, and disposition.

For a deeper walk-through of the docket format and what each entry means, see the Westmoreland County arrest records page and the court records page.

Westmoreland County Prison Facility

The Westmoreland County Prison is the county's jail. County bid documents for inmate food service list it at 3000 South Grande Boulevard with capacity for 704 inmates. Treat 704 as an official county-document figure and recheck the current prison page or prison-board statistics before relying on it as a live count. The facility is run by the county, separate from the courthouse offices in downtown Greensburg.

Sheriff's Office

The Sheriff's Office and the prison serve different roles. The Sheriff runs civil process, transport, and the warrant division. The prison houses people in custody and keeps the roster. Confirm the current capacity figure with the prison or prison board, since the 704 number comes from a procurement document, not a live dashboard.

Booking and Custody in Westmoreland County

An arrest does not always start at the prison. A criminal case in Westmoreland County often begins before a magisterial district judge with a preliminary arraignment and a preliminary hearing. Bail may be set at that stage. A person who cannot post bail, or who faces a no-bail hold, may be committed to the Westmoreland County Prison. That commitment is what shows up on the roster, with a booking number and a commitment date.

Once committed, a person is logged with a booking number, given a housing unit letter, and added to the active list. The roster reflects this intake, but the legal track runs in parallel through the courts. So a person can be on the roster while the case still moves through hearings, bail review, and trial.

The key caution is simple. Custody is not conviction. The roster is a list of who is held, not a list of who has been found guilty. A booking on the roster means a person was committed to the prison. It does not by itself prove a charge stuck or a case ended. For the case outcome, the docket sheet is the record that matters.

VINELink Custody Notifications

Each roster row carries a notification button. The county roster links directly to PASAVIN and VINELink from the inmate row, so you do not have to start over on a separate site. VINELink lets victims, witnesses, and the public register for free alerts about a custody change, such as a release or a transfer. Notifications can come by phone, email, or text depending on the choices you set.

To register, open the VINELink service, select Pennsylvania, search the person by name or ID, and set your contact method. Because the prison roster only shows current custody, the notification tool is the better way to learn when someone leaves. For verifying a release after it happens, see the released inmates page, which explains the full check.

Visitation, Mail, and Phone

The prison runs visitation, mail, commissary, and phone service under its own rules. These rules change for lockdowns, holidays, staffing, and emergencies, so the official pages are the only safe source for current details. Do not travel for a visit without confirming the schedule first. The schedule below points to the official source rather than listing times that could be out of date.

Visit TypeScheduleNotes
Social visitationConfirm on the official Visitation pageVisitor approval and ID rules apply; confirm before arrival.
Attorney visitationConfirm on the official Visitation pageUsually handled separately from social visits.
Video visitationConfirm on the official Visitation pageCheck the official vendor and any fees on the county page.

Mail has its own format and banned-item rules. Use the official Mail page for the mailing address, envelope and package limits, photo and book rules, and legal-mail handling. Many jails require the full inmate name and booking number on the envelope, but follow the exact Westmoreland format on the county page.

Money and calls run through the prison too. The Commissary page covers deposit methods, limits, and fees. The Phone Services page covers the provider, account setup, and call options. Do not rely on a third-party vendor page unless the county names it as the official provider.

Note: Always confirm visitation, mail, and phone rules on the official Westmoreland County Prison pages before you travel, mail an item, or set up an account.

Reading a Roster Result

The roster result list is a table of current inmates sorted by last-name initial or by your search. It is plain text with sort links, not a profile gallery. The screenshot below shows the kind of result the prison roster returns for a last-name search.

Each row gives the name, DOB, booking number, commitment date, and unit, with a notification button on the side. Note that a blank charge or bond field is normal here, because the county never posts those on the roster. Take the booking number to a UJS docket sheet for the rest.
